USING IN CLASSROOM

How does Reel Genius enhance classroom instruction?

Reel Genius is a tool that offers short-form overlay that saves planning time, reinforces learning, and prompts values-based discussion. Lessons are designed to complement—not replace—your curriculum.

What’s the structure of each lesson?

Each 10–15 min microlesson includes:

  1. A 2–3 min film clip
  2. An AI avatar educator that guides theme explanation
  3. Personal reflection and subject focused questions
  4. AI-exercise to strengthen comprehension. Based on the answer, the AI may provide the student with a second prompt to dig deeper to give a stronger answer. Students get feedback immediately.

What topics does Reel Genius cover?

At this time Reel Genius and Stand Together have collaboratively designed lessons based on Civics, have partnered with Shift Failure on the topic of entrepreneurship and with ThisWayUp, focusing on well-being. We will continuously release new lessons and themes over time.

Is student data collected?

When students create an account, their first and last name, and email address are collected. We may ask for a student’s date of birth during sign-up to help confirm age-appropriate use of the platform; however, this information is not stored or collected. Teachers can also involve students without requiring an account by sharing lessons via a projector. Students who choose to create an account may use any email address.

How is the AI model in Reel Genius trained to provide personalized feedback and engage students in lesson exercises?

At the end of each lesson, students answer short reflection prompts in an AI-powered chat. The AI guides a brief, focused exchange to deepen thinking—asking follow-ups, offering encouragement, and checking responses against accepted answers. The AI adapts its next prompt based on the student’s last reply and gives targeted hints or next steps.

To keep students on task each chat allows only a limited number of back-and-forth turns. When the limit is reached, the AI ends the chat. This feedback is intended to supplement classroom instruction, not replace it. Teachers remain the primary source of evaluation, and AI-generated feedback should be understood as formative guidance to support learning, to provide meaningful, personalized feedback.

What guardrails does Reel Genius use for AI chats, and what can teachers see?

Reel Genius currently uses Open AI models. Student chats are used solely to deliver feedback in this lesson flow and are not used to train public models. It’s tuned to follow lesson objectives and classroom norms.

The AI is instructed to focus on the lesson questions. If a student asks about unrelated topics or posts content beyond the prompt, the AI will redirect them back to the task and remind them of class expectations. Chats are intentionally brief (limited turns) to reduce distraction and keep feedback actionable. Teachers can view student answers and AI feedback in your teacher dashboard. You will have insight to off-topic or concerning responses (e.g., repeated non-answers, inappropriate language) are flagged for quick review.

ENGAGEMENT + INCLUSION

What are best practices for using Reel Genius?

Reel Genius is a tool that is not intended to be a core curriculum. It is intended to be a short-form, practice and reflection layer, and experiential supplement to a specific subject.

How do film clips improve student engagement and comprehension?

Film clips act as emotional anchors and cognitive bridges. In our pilot, teachers reported that cinematic content helped students connect deeply with characters, visualize abstract concepts, and apply values-based reflection. This multisensory approach made lessons more memorable, meaningful, and engaging, particularly for students who struggle with traditional instructional methods.

How are films selected for educational relevance?

Titles are curated for grade-appropriateness, thematic alignment, and instructional value.

Can students interact with the content?

Yes! All lessons include reflection prompts, project-based learning extensions, and AI exercise prompts that ties to the clip and lesson theme.

Are Reel Genius lessons adaptable for diverse learners?

All video clips include closed captions (CC) to support visual learners and enhance comprehension. Subtitles not only aid those who prefer reading along but also benefit learners with hearing impairments, non-native English speakers, and anyone who processes information better visually.

PERMISSIONS + LEGAL

Can I download or share clips with others?

No. All clips and content on Reel Genius are protected under licensing agreements and therefore are strictly non-downloadable and non-shareable. Users may not copy, distribute, or use the content outside the Reel Genius platform under any circumstances.

However, Reel Genius is completely free to sign up and use—teachers and students can access all lessons directly within the platform only, without needing to download or redistribute anything.
